Flexible child custody agreements can impact your ability to plan

As we discussed recently, you need to take the time to review your holiday child custody plans now. Not all parents who have a child custody agreement will find the schedule for the holidays in that order. Some parents have a more flexible agreement that enables them to take the events of the holiday season into account when deciding when the children will spend time with each parent.

We understand that you are probably ready to know when you are going to have your children with you. Since there is less than a month to Thanksgiving and less than two until Christmas, now is a good time to try to get some agreement made with your ex.

There are several things to think about right now. First, you need to think about when your major holiday festivities will be held so that you can try to have your children with you for those. Second, your ex needs to do the same thing for that side of the family. Third, you need to get the dates and times of any school, church or other holiday events that your children will attend.

As you and your ex go back and forth about when the children will celebrate with each family, make sure that you think about what your children would want to do. This might help sway a decision one way. For example, if your ex has family coming in from out of town, your children might want to be able to spend time with their cousins while they are in town. This might make it worth it to let your ex have them on the days when they can do that.

It is hard to think that you and your ex might not be able to come to an agreement, but this might happen. Be prepared to explore other avenues, such as mediation, to get a deal worked out.
