Making the decision to adopt a child is a wonderful way to help a child have a stable home. When you make this decision, you have to be sure that you meet the requirements of the applicable laws so that the adoption can move forward without any obstacles.
The adoption laws in Texas are in compliance with the Uniform Adoption Code. Currently, same-sex couples can adopt in the state; however, there is a bill moving through the legislature that could allow private adoption agencies to decline these adoptions.
One thing that matters in Texas is the age of the child. A child who is 12 years old or older would have to agree to an adoption before it can occur. This means that the court will ask the child’s opinion about whether to allow the adoption or not.
Any adult can adopt a child in Texas, as long as the adult successfully completes the home study and other necessary steps in the adoption process.
A married couple can adopt a child; however, both spouses have to be included on the adoption petition. One spouse can’t petition for an adoption to occur if the other spouse isn’t willing to go through the process.
Whether you are considering adopting a baby, an older child or a stepchild, make sure that you fully understand what you need to do during the adoption process. You also need to make sure that you are fully ready to deal with the responsibilities that come with adopting a child because adoption is a major life decision for you and the child.
