Parents should consider joint custody

On Behalf of | May 31, 2016 | Uncategorized

It is not an easy thing for a parent to watch as their child’s other parent is awarded custody by a judge. Naturally, they will feel upset and hurt about the situation and maybe even start to question if there was something else they could have done to prevent such a thing from happening. It may be hard to believe, but there is actually a way for parents to avoid having to deal with the heartbreak that losing custody of their child can cause: agreeing on joint custody.

Often, when two people cannot seem to agree on child custody, they will find themselves standing before a judge. Not only can this make parents nervous, but it can also cause them to feel terrified about the possible outcome. It is understandable that parents may not enjoy being in the presence of each other or may not feel as though they can discuss the matter in a mature way, but when looking at the benefits of joint custody, they may change their minds.

One of the biggest reasons for parents to agree on joint custody is that the child will be able to maintain the relationship he or she has with both parents. This is something that is often hard to do when one parent has sole custody, and the other is only awarded visitation. It can be a fear that the child will drift from their parent, but with joint custody, there may be less of a chance of this occurring.

When parents have found themselves having difficulty agreeing on the matter of child custody, they should remember to keep the child’s best interests in mind. This will require them to put their own desires aside, but hopefully, the result will be the child having a happy life and healthy relationships with both parents. Anyone who needs assistance with discussing child custody with their child’s other parent will want to consider speaking to an attorney at Regan Armstrong & Associates.
