How can we handle child custody matters in a new school year?

On Behalf of | Aug 31, 2018 | Uncategorized

Now that the school season is back in full swing, it is time for newly divorced parents to evaluate how they are going to handle some of the basic challenges that come with this time of year. There are many different things that you need to consider so that you and your children have as little stress as possible.

As you try to figure out how to navigate school situations as a single parent, there are a few different questions you can ask yourself that might help you decide on what you are going to do.

How are we going to handle transportation?

Depending on the specifics of your child custody order, your children might be taken to school from one parent’s home and end up at that other parent’s house at the end of the school day. Determining how this is going to happen can take some finagling. If the bus route and drop off location is going to change often, you have to work with the school to ensure this happens. You also may need to figure out how to get the child’s belongings from one home to the other.

How will communication regarding the schedule work?

School events, homework assignments and other special events and tasks can throw a wrench in carefully laid out plans. You and your ex have to decide how you are going to handle the communication about these matters. Calling each other might be feasible; however, you might find that emails or text messages that give you the specifics in writing are a better option.

In all matters related to your children, it is best if you and your ex can negotiate to find solutions. Discuss the way things will work with your children so they are prepared. Be ready and willing to communicate civilly with your ex.
