Happily married couple mulls divorce due to child’s medical needs

| Jul 13, 2018 | Uncategorized

When you think of divorce, you probably think of unhappy couples. The last thing that you would associate with divorce is a loving couple who is contemplating divorce for the benefits it could bring their children. Unfortunately, one Texas couple is exploring this possibility.

The couple has been married for nine years and have two children. Their eldest child, a 6-year-old girl, was born with Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome. As a result, she requires intensive medial care and around-the-clock care.

The couple reports that they spend approximately 30 percent of their income, or $15,000 per year, on medical care for their daughter. The man is an Army veteran who currently has an income of around $40,000. Due to their household income, they don’t qualify for Medicaid.

They are considering going through a divorce so that the child’s mother will qualify for Medicaid through the state. They have tried applying for state assistance that wouldn’t require divorce. They found out that they are number 59,979 on the list, with some people waiting as long as 14 years for assistance.

The man said that being in a position where you have to choose between your child and your marriage is an odd predicament. This couple — and others in similar circumstances — should review all available options to determine what they are going to do.

If they do go through with the divorce, they will need to work out all the details that any couple needs to. Anyone ending a marriage should prepare for property division, child custody, and support matters to be discussed.
