What is divorce mediation? How does it work?

Going through a divorce isn’t an easy journey. You will have a lot of decisions to make. Each one has the chance to greatly impact your future. Many divorces these days are resolved through mediation. If you and your ex are trying to work things out in this manner, there are some important points for you to consider.

What if we can’t work together?

Divorce mediation isn’t a process that involves you and your ex being left alone to hash things out. Instead, you work with an impartial third party who has been trained to deal with the contentious terms of divorce. It might be possible that you never even have to be in the same room as your ex. The mediator can work as a go-between to try to help you and your ex resolve the issues. If you can’t come to an agreement with the mediator’s help, you can put your divorce before the court for resolution.

What do we have to decide?

You have to decide on all matters that relate to the divorce. This includes child custody, child support, spousal support and property division. Each of these points should be considered as its own entity. You couldn’t use the terms of the property division settlement as the basis for a decision regarding child custody.

Throughout the process, you might have questions. You need to get those answered before you make any decision. You also need to make sure that your rights are respected and that the terms of the divorce are in kind with the applicable Texas laws.
