With the rise in popularity of prenuptial agreements, Houston couples are realizing the benefits of such a marital contract, understanding that it is no longer something utilized or required by only the very wealthy. There are many situations today in which a prenuptial agreement can be very beneficial to even the everyday husband and wife. With this in mind, however, it is important to note that initiating a discussion about such a document can still be difficult.
This was the topic of an article that recently was published. The author itemized some different ways to help make requesting and creating a prenuptial agreement easier and more likely to be accepted. One such suggestion was to ask for the contract as soon as possible rather that right before entering a marriage. This can avoid the other party feeling like he or she is being coerced in some way.
It is also important that each person provide a full and honest disclosure of assets as well as liabilities. Doing so up front can help to prevent conflicts about property rights and give a head start to identifying what will be separate versus marital property in the end. Securing separate attorneys for each spouse-to-be is a must in order to avoid any conflict of interest on either person’s part.
Today’s engaged couples can benefit in many ways from prenuptial agreements. If you and your future spouse are interested in such a contract, you may wish to have a consultation with an attorney to learn more about how to best utilize such a document.
