Strengthening economy linked to growing number of divorces

On Behalf of | Feb 18, 2014 | Uncategorized

During the recession, there seemed to be no end to the number of sad stories detailing the financial troubles of individuals and businesses in Houston and around the nation. While challenges still exist, the continued improvement of our country’s economy is bringing some good news now and then, giving back some hope that seemed to have been lost for a time. While this may be good for people’s bank accounts, it may not necessarily be good for every part of their lives. Experiences such as illness, accidents, divorce and more can still be found.

One positive facet of the recession, according to some experts, was a decrease in the number of couples who sought a divorce. Now, however, that drop is being looked upon not quite as favorably in light of a study recently published by a sociologist from the University of Maryland. The report concurs that the country’s number of divorces declined during the recession but indicates that it was not for positive reasons but rather because couples felt they could not pay the costs associated with getting divorced.

Data utilized in the study led the sociologist to determine that 150,000 couples did not get divorced between 2008 and 2011 that would have chosen such a path had they been able to afford it. The study goes on to suggest that as the financial picture continues to improve, so also will the divorce rate continue to increase.

When facing the end of a marriage, there are many issues with which to contend. Working with a lawyer for help with property division, visitation plans, spousal support and more may be one way to help yourself through the process.
