New thoughts about divorce trends in the U.S.

The prevalence of divorce in America can at times seem overwhelming. Most people in Houston either personally know someone who has been through a divorce or have been directly affected themselves in some way. With divorce legal issues ranging from property division to child custody, the angst that can often accompany the end of a marriage has led many researchers to seek out reasons for divorce and understand the phenomenon more fully.

An article recently ran in the media and had a new twist on some thoughts about why divorces may occur. A study conducted by a University of Texas at Austin demographer reports that conservative states have on average higher divorce rates than those known to be more politically liberal. The article continues and states that the research throws out the previous thoughts that economic challenges were at the root of the reason for this discrepancy.

Instead, the study asserts that pressure from conservative religious groups to marry at young ages, abstain from sex or living together before married and to make access to birth control harder leads to situations that make marriages more vulnerable and less stable. These pressures are also said to affect those residents who are not religious but live in such societies.

No matter the reason for marital instability or divorces, the realities are common and cannot be denied. Anyone who is either contemplating or entering into a divorce may want to work with a private attorney to help navigate what can be a complicated process.
