How to ease the stress of divorce

On Behalf of | May 21, 2013 | Uncategorized

Other than a death, the breakup of a marriage can be the most emotionally traumatic event a person may go through in life. It’s no wonder that divorce can be linked to depression, alcoholism and in some cases, post traumatic stress syndrome.

Aside from the emotional burdens, divorcees may experience financial hardships, including credit issues and budget shortfalls (in trying to maintain separate households).

But it does not have to be this way. In fact, a growing number of Texas divorcees are seeking lawyers who help in avoiding these stressers as they become familiar with alternatives to traditional court proceedings.

With that said, it is helpful to find an attorney who understands the benefits of collaborative divorce. Through this method, the parties commit to resolving their difference by relying on other professionals (e.g. real estate appraisers, accountants, and parenting consultants) to help them reach commong ground.

Some couples look to mediation to resolve their disputes. Much like the collaborative process, the parties work with a neutral third party to reach a compromise. Mediation is often much cheaper than traditional litigation, which can take away much of the stress of divorce.

Perhaps the most important aspect of collaborative divorce and mediation is that it forces the parties to think differently about child custody and parenting time (which are arguably the most stressful issues in a divorce). Essentially, parents are tasked with thinking about how the child will benefit from the the decisions they are making, instead of trying to prove who is better suited to be the primary caretaker.

If you have questions about reducing stress in a divorce, an experienced family law attorney can help.
