Did MJ have a prenup this time?

In our prior posts on prenuptial agreements, we highlighted how they may be controversial, unromantic and at the same time…necessary. We also discussed the types of people (and couples) who would benefit from having a prenuptial agreement.

When Michael Jordan married his girlfirend of five years, Yvette Prieto, many people were proably curious about the guest list (which included former NBA stars Patrick Ewing and Scottie Pippen), famous friends (Tiger Woods, Spike Lee) and a host of designer dresses.

In light of the star power and pomp and circumstance, the bigger question is whether a prenuptial agreement was involved. For those not familiar with Jordan’s prior marriage (which lead to a bitter divorce), his 2006 divorce settlement netted his ex-wife nearly $180 million.

With such a large settlement ending his first marriage, we can only suspect that a prenup was carefully negotiated this time around.

Indeed, marital bliss and prenup negotiations don’t always go hand in hand, but as more Texas couples become ambivalent about marriage, discussions surrounding “what if” are taking a different tone. Basically, couples are actually finding the romance in planning for the future by figuring out where they want to be financially after a certain number of years after marriage.

With couples who are both young professionals, financial security is very important, especially after suffering through the last recession. It means enough not only to have serious discussions about it, but to carve out fair resolutions should things between them change.

Nevertheless, prenups are not for everyone, and the subject should be broached carefully. If you have questions, an experienced family law attorney can help.
