After the Christmas decorations go away, retailers set their sights on Valentine’s Day. For the average American, cupid’s special day has been in advertisements and store displays for weeks now. While this day may be special to approach secret crushes, make marriage proposals, or cook that special meal for that significant person, many Americans look at Valentine’s Day with dread.
This is especially so for people in troubled relationships. They won’t get flowers, candy or that special card letting them know how much they are appreciated. Instead, it may just be another day (and it will probably rain too.)
But it does not have to be that way.
In fact, Valentine’s Day is quickly become an emancipation day of sorts for people who are leaving troubled marriages. As we wrote in a prior post, many people initiate divorces in January because the holiday season has ended, and the fears about ruining it with a divorce announcement have faded. For those who saw January as the right time for a divorce, most are being finalized this week. Also more divorce parties are being planned as people are set to start new lives. It’s no secret that Match.com and E-Harmony listings spike during Valentine’s week.
Suffice it to say, we know that Valentine’s Day can be a very sensitive topic, whether you are in the throes of a tumultuous relationship or just finding bliss. Either way, there are a number of ways to make it special, even if a divorce is involved.
