Stupid questions divorcees hate to hear

On Behalf of | Feb 8, 2013 | Uncategorized

It can be surprising how much (or how little) people have to say after you announce that you’re getting divorced. Indeed, some friends and family will genuinely care about how you feel, and will want to support you in any way they can, while others simply want the juicy gossip so that they will have a story to tell.

Either way, the things people say may not be artfully proposed, and they have the potential to rub you the wrong way. A list of these quips is below, along with what should be said instead.

What happened? He (or she) was such a nice person – It’s an unfortunate situation. You two were a cute couple, but sometimes things just don’t work out.

Don’t worry about it. Things will be okay – I know it hurts right now, but your divorce won’t ruin your life. Believe it or not, life gets better.

So…are you back on the market? – There’s no artful translation for this one. Just don’t say it.

He (or she) wasn’t worth it anyway – When people change, sometimes you have to change as well.

Will you ever get married again? – It may not seem like it now, but you will find love and happiness again.

What are you going to do now? – I’ll be here to support you in any way I can.

I knew he (or she) wasn’t meant for you – Again, no artful translation, this only lampoons their choice for a mate.

I know how you feel – I can only imagine how you’re feeling, but I’m here to help.
