Kobe and Vanessa are staying together

On Behalf of | Jan 18, 2013 | Uncategorized

In our prior posts, we discussed the potential financial implications of having a prenuptial agreement. With news breaking that Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa have reconciled, we can’t help but to believe that love is sometimes more valuable than money.

Kobe and Vanessa married more than 10 years ago without a prenuptial agreement. He was 22, and she was 18. As such, a divorce could have had a huge financial effect on both parties. Assuming that Vanessa would have had primary custody of the couple’s two children, she could have been paid nearly $365,000 per month in child support. She could have collected nearly $1 million in spousal support each month as well. The couples’ property settlement was estimated at more than $50 million, which reminded some analysts of Michael Jordan’s divorce settlement.

Some cynics may believe that giving up the exclusive lifestyle of an NBA wife would have been considerably difficult, and that this may have played into Vanessa’s decision to stay with Kobe.

Nevertheless, sources close to the couple say that their bond meant much more than all the money that could have been split. They describe the couple as “two people without friends or close relationships with other people.” Kobe is described as withdrawn from his teammates, many who are considerably younger. Vanessa is noted as being not the nicest or warmest person among NBA wives. They reportedly don’t have good relationships with their respective families either.

So at the end of the day, it is not surprising that they lean on each other. Regardless of money, that is ultimately what a marriage is all about.
