Frankel, Hoppy split has makings of collaborative divorce

On Behalf of | Jan 4, 2013 | Uncategorized

In our prior post on collaborative divorce, we discussed the benefits of couples working together to reduce the emotional toil that comes with traditional divorces. We also wanted to add that collaborative divorces could yield some substantial benefits to children, who often do not react well to sudden changes to their families. Kids also have an uncanny (yet unfortunate) knack for blaming themselves for their parents’ divorces, which is another reason that collaborative divorces are gaining traction as more couples divorce.

The backdrop to collaborative divorce makes the reported split between Bethanny Frankel and Jason Hoppy intriguing. The former star of the “Real Housewives of New York City” and founder of Skinnygirl products announced on December 23rd that she and her husband of 2 ½ years were splitting up. As the calendar turned to 2013, reports swirled that the couple were still living in their New York City loft.

Most traditional divorces begin with one party moving out of the family home, but one important part of collaborative divorce involves proactive steps to work together to resolve differences, especially when children are involved. It is entirely possible that Frankel and Hoppy want to keep things as normal as possible for the sake of their daughter. (As we mentioned earlier, children can be affected by sudden changes in their families).

The decision to use the collaborative method involves planning, as the process is not for everyone. To learn more about it and to determine if you would benefit, contact an experienced family law attorney.
