CIA Director Petraeus resigns amid scandal of extramarital affair

After an FBI probe into suspicious emails uncovered his extramarital affair, CIA Director David Petraeus abruptly resigned from his post. According to a FoxNews.com report, The FBI had been investigating an unrelated case when the name of Paula Broadwell was discovered in several messages. The Bureau continued on this lead and eventually uncovered the affair.

Broadwell is a biographer who co-wrote Petraeus’ book about his personal and military life, “All In.” She is a West Point graduate and is also married. Petraeus’ wife, Holly, works for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The two had been married for 37 years, but the affair was reportedly an open secret with people who knew the couple. Nevertheless, speculation is swirling about the couple’s next move.

Fox News also reports that Petraeus met with President Obama before submitting his letter of resignation, which he accepted. In speaking to his staff, Petraeus appeared contrite. He said, “after being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.”

While speculation over intelligence mishaps regarding the attack on the U.S. compound in Libya intensifies, the FBI’s probe now shifts to Broadwell, and whether she leaked classified details in a recent speech at the University of Denver regarding the real reason for the attack. The compound was the largest CIA station in North Africa and had been used to house intelligence prisoners. Broadwell’s speech suggested that the attack was, in part, to free captured Libyan militia members.
