Early mistakes can lead to long-term marriage issues

On Behalf of | Nov 10, 2014 | Uncategorized

So often the things that cause fissures in a relationship are not what we may think of as big important issues, but rather things we may initially believe are trivial. Relationships can also start to fray if one partner allows the other partner to act in a manner that is in some way disrespectful. It is not unusual for a divorce to result from a spouse wanting to leave behind a daily grind of hurt feelings and resentment caused by spending time with someone to whom they no longer feel connected.

So how does it get to this point? The problem may be that when we’re in love it is easy to project our needs and hopes on someone while failing to realize what that person is really like. Recently, The Huffington Post asked its divorced, middle-aged readers to share their biggest marriage mistakes. Here are a few of the mistakes that the readers described:

  • Accepting poor treatment to the point of feeling like a voiceless non-person.
  • Getting married at a very young age and ignoring their spouse’s infidelities.
  • Forgoing personal interests out of fear of displeasing their spouse.
  • Marrying someone who had very different dietary preferences.
  • Trying to carry the full load of the relationship in regard to communication and love.

Some of the things on this list may seem mundane, but they are not. Your life is what happens a minute at a time, day after day. You should not allow that time to slip away while in a state of emotional turmoil or unhappiness. Marriages often require compromises, which both parties have to make in order for things to work. If that is not what is happening, then a fresh start may be what is needed.

If you are ready to step away from a situation that has become untenable, then you may wish to speak to a Texas divorce attorney. You can have the attorney explain your options regarding such things as child custody and alimony.
