Tim Duncan's divorce finalized in 'secret' hearing

As the San Antonio Spurs advanced to the second round of the NBA playoffs against the Golden State Warriors, we reported on the clandestine divorce petition filed by Amy Duncan, wife of Spurs' power forward Tim Duncan.  The petition ostensibly was a result of Tim's investigation into his wife's relationship with a personal trainer.

Insiders who know the couple indicated that Duncan had hoped to delay the filing until after the playoffs, but as the Spurs advanced to the NBA Finals, the matter became public.

In a recent report by Deadspin.com, the divorce was recently finalized, in an unusual fashion.

The district court judge assigned to the case conducted an off-site hearing in the office of Tim Duncan's lawyer to formalize the agreements reached by the parties. The judge indicated that it was not unusual for judges to hold "on-the-record" hearings outside of court.

The parties apparently felt uncomfortable having a hearing at the courthouse because of the specter of paparazzi interfering with their orderly procession to and from the building.

Nevertheless, the Duncans' divorce is an example of two warring parties coming together to resolve their differences quickly and efficiently. It was rumored that the parties were bracing for protracted litigation and had raw feelings (and they very well could have had some spirited exchanges), but ultimately a prenuptial agreement likely tempered any substantial disputes.

The terms of the divorce, including custody and support of the couples' children, were not disclosed. If you have questions about keeping a high-profile divorce private, an experienced family law attorney can help.
