How to avoid parenting disputes with an ex's new love interest

The term "baby mama drama" has become a famous pop culture reference that less than a generation ago, was only used in urban settings. But as blended families became more prevalent in Houston and across the United States, the friction between biological mothers and new girlfriends (and wives) has become a national issue.

In fact there are a number of brewing celebrity feuds over ex-spouses and new love interests when children are involved. LeAnn Rimes and Brandi Glanville have had a brewing Twitter battle over their time with Glanville's children. Halle Berry's current boyfriend and her former beau had a knockdown brawl last Thanksgiving. Also, Elin Nordegren reportedly hates Lindsey Vonn being around her kids.

These clashes exemplify the need for parents and new love interests to find common ground for the best interests of the children. As the old adage goes, you don't have to like each other, you have to peacefully co-exist. To that end, the following tips can help in avoiding parenting disputes with an ex's new love.

Remember who the parent is - This tip is applicable to both parents and those who are in relationships with a person who has children. Remember who actually has the final call when it comes to children. As a general rule, it is best to defer to the parent, even if you believe you know best.

Love is not a competition - Avoid the temptation to outdo the parent or show them up when it comes to giving gifts or participating in activities.

Know that kids will play you against each other - It's the oldest game children will play. So be on the lookout.
