What aid can adoptive parents of special needs children receive?

On Behalf of | Jul 31, 2015 | Uncategorized

Every child needs and deserves a home where he or she is loved and looked after. But sadly, some of the children who are most in need are the most difficult to place in homes.

Often, special needs children require extra help in their daily lives. A child who has special health care issues or a disability may require costly treatment or accommodations. Parents who are interested in adopting a special needs child may be hesitant to do so out of fear of being unable to handle the expenses.

Fortunately, The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has a program offering financial assistance to adoptive parents of special needs children. So what benefits are available to help cover costs?

  • Reimbursement for expenses incurred through the adoption process. Up to $1,200 in benefits may be provided for child placement service fees, court costs and attorney fees.
  • Monthly payments for supportive education, child care and other maintenance. This amount is determined by the special needs of the child and the parents’ economic circumstances.
  • The child’s health care coverage in the form of Medicaid. This benefit helps defray costs for medical care as well as psychiatric/behavioral care, eye care and dental care. Medicaid can also help pay for durable medical equipment and medical transportation.

So if you have the desire to provide a home for a special needs child, there are benefits available in Texas to help with expenses. But certain criteria must be met in order to receive these benefits.

A Texas adoption attorney may be able to help you plan and carry out an adoption of a special needs child. The attorney could offer you guidance in taking the necessary legal steps in completing the adoption process.
