With the last week of August coming upon us, many in Houston are looking forward to Labor Day weekend. Dubbed as the last summer weekend, it is expected to be celebrated with family barbeques, football games and shopping trips for school supplies.
For some families, they will travelling out of town. According to a recent Bloomberg.com report, more people will take to the road for Labor Day than last year. In fact, it is expected to be the highest number since 2008 (before the historic stock market crash).
With such an important travel weekend, divorced and separated parents must take steps to avoid disagreements (and disappointment). This post will provide some helpful tips.
Plan ahead – Indeed, Labor Day weekend is this coming weekend, but impromptu trips at the last minute are more likely to cause confusion and strife. In the midst of your planning, it is helpful to provide an itinerary with phone numbers to where you can be reached, as well as alternate contacts.
Be flexible – The old adage “Murphy’s Law is always in effect” is important here. When planning trips or gatherings, something is bound to go wrong, which may affect exchanges or limit the time you have with your child. With this reality, it is important to be flexible with your plans.
Be a team player – The best thing about holidays is how much fun children have. Whether it is with friends, cousins or older family members, these are the times where memories are made. With that said, make sure that your decisions and actions are child focused.
